Winnipeg Committee for Safety

A safe and healthy community is one in which its citizens work together to address local problems and support one another.

The Winnipeg Committee for Safety (WCFS) works with citizens, local organizations and governments to make Winnipeg a safe and healthy city. Since 1999, the Committee has brought people together from across the city to brainstorm ideas, share information, set priorities, build networks among residents and agencies and empower residents to take action in their own neighbourhoods. The mandate of the WCFS is to support, assist, stimulate and mobilize the community on safety concerns. Since it was established by City Council, the Committee has offered safety resources and recognition that continue to make our community a great place to live!

In 2006, WCFS began the action plan to pursue official designation for Winnipeg as a Safe Community from Safe Communities Canada and the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre on Community Safety Promotion. A Safe Community is one in which people and organizations have come together to do two things: to reduce injury and to promote the safety and well-being of all its citizens. As well, Safe Communities in Canada share four attributes: Leadership, Priority Setting for Programs, Sustainability and Community Engagement. These attributes have guided the actions for WCFS over the past year and will continue to guide us in 2007 as we establish a Safe Community Leadership Table and set formal safety priorities which reflect the model from Safe Communities Canada.
