Safe Communities Priority-Setting Event

04.24.2008 - The Winnipeg Committee for Safety is actively working towards Winnipeg being declared a designated Safe Community by the Safe Communities Foundation of Canada.

The Safe Communities Model used in Canada is based on the model used by the World Health Organization. A designated Safe Community is one which believes that safety is a basic right, and views its designation as a public affirmation of, and testament to, its aspiration to create a safer life for all its citizens. Stakeholders set priorities for action, identify ways of achieving targets, facilitate, promote or run programs and then evaluate their endeavors. A Safe Community is one in which people and organizations have come together to do two things: to reduce injury and to promote the safety and well being of all its citizens.

Since 1999, the Winnipeg Committee for Safety (WCFS) has been supporting, assisting, stimulating and mobilizing the community on safety concerns. The WCFS was created by City Council to connect the community with City Council, Civic Administration and the community itself. The WCFS has taken the lead in working towards Safe Communities designation.
